My entry into the educational field was as a flight and ground instructor certified by the Federal Aviation Administration while beginning a career as a professional pilot. This path led me to work for a large international training company teaching both in the classroom and in simulators. In support of these activities I began formalizing curriculums, building lesson plans and instructor guides and other instructional design – aka “courseware development” - activities.
This effort eventually led to a position managing the training program for an air carrier. Because of the ever-increasing globalization of the economy, I became quite interested in both the formalized instructional design process and its implementation into the performance improvement process and became a Certified Professional in Learning and Performance through the American Society for Training and Development.
Shortly thereafter, the company I worked for was merged with a much larger firm. My position – along with all those within my company – were eliminated in that acquisition. Continuing my activities in the learning industry, I am currently employed as a full-time instructional designer for a major manufacturing firm. I also periodically contract my instructional design and teaching/facilitating skills to other firms.
